Thurston Moore dei Sonic Youth ha fatto un nuovo album che ha definito «un requiem per i bambini di Gaza»
Il disco s'intitola They Came Like Swallows - Seven Requiems for the Children of Gaza e lo ha realizzato in collaborazione con il musicista, produttore e discografico Bonner Kramer.
«Un album dedicato alla dignità umana e alla speranza di un pianeta pacifico» sono i presupposti che hanno spinto il frontman dei Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore, e il leggendario musicista e produttore e discografico e amico di lungo corso dei Sonic Youth Bonner Kramer (c’è lui in mezzo a quasi tutte le cose migliori uscite dalla downtown scene newyorchese degli anni ’80), a scrivere, produrre e registrare il loro primo album insieme: They Came Like Swallows – Seven Requiems for the Children of Gaza (in uscita il primo maggio con Silver Current Records). L’album, come spiegano i due, vuole essere «una preghiera per le anime delle famiglie palestinesi devastate dalla guerra e decimate dalla brutalità del genocidio».
L’idea, come scrive Pitchfork, ha iniziato a prendere forma durante una serie di sessioni improvvisate a Miami. Ai due non è servito molto. «Kramer ha allestito uno studio di registrazione nell’appartamento in cui mi ero trasferito, con il sole della Florida che filtrava attraverso le foglie di palma, le lucertole che scorrazzavano sui davanzali delle finestre. Ci siamo semplicemente buttati» spiega Moore in un’intervista concessa a Loudersound. La prima traccia è già uscita e si chiama “Urn Burial”, che significa sepoltura nell’urna, e indica una pratica funeraria in cui i resti cremati di un defunto vengono riposti in un contenitore, l’urna, che viene successivamente sepolto nel terreno, collocato in un colombario o in una cappella.
Moore ha pubblicato il suo ultimo album, “Flow Critical Lucidity”, nel 2024. L’anno prima aveva pubblicato un memoir, Sonic Life. L’ultimo lavoro di Kramer invece risale allo scorso anno, l’LP Interior of an Edifice Under the Sea, realizzato insieme ai Pan American. They Came Like Swallows – Seven Requiems for the Children of Gaza conterrà sette tracce: “Urn Burial”; “The Redness in the West”; “The Third Migration”; “They Came Like Swallows”; “The Living Theater”; “The Oceans are Crying”; “Insight”.
